Identifying EFL Teacher’s Needs in Teaching Speaking within 21st Century
The development of the science and technology implicates the essential of
education, especially in English Foreign Language teaching speaking. One of the
teacher’s roles is to build the student’s character and managing them to mastering
one of 21st century skill; effective communication. It is important to distinguish the
requirements how to teach speaking in the 21st Century as well. This research aimed
to identify the EFL teacher’s need in teaching speaking in within 21st Century. This
research uses qualitative approach as a method. The data is analyzed, interpreted,
and represented descriptively. The result of this research revealed that the
characteristics of ideal EFL teacher seen from their good competences, skillful,
technologically knowledgeable, always improve their professionalism, and can
speak English natively. Furthermore, the needs that should be done by teacher to
get those ideals such as participate on English speaking workshops, speaking
seminars, speaking observations and other performance speaking trainings, using
the internet that use English, possessing informal discussions with EFL teacher
colleagues at the same school, studying relevant sources, conducting speaking
research and team-teaching speaking, reading the several teachers' magazines and
journals accessible, prepare or provide good speaking material to stimulate the
student's interest, aware of the student's learning issues in learning speaking, being
friendly, making excellent notes, going to lead games, employing humor, and not
pressuring pupils who are lagging behind the entire class, and create interactive
classes, have good pronunciation, provide clear explanations, and speak English
fluently
