An Analysis of English Lecturer’s Perception in Teaching Reading Using Authentic Material in the 21st Century at University
Reading is a bridge of knowledge, by reading the people will know
everything in this world. To acquire reading skills, students often experience
difficulties in understanding a text because the text is designed for language
learning purposes and uses a perfect grammatical structure so that students are
confused. Therefore, the role of teachers and teaching material is significant. The
teacher as a facilitator has the responsibility to provide learning material besides
textbook, such as authentic material. This research aims to know the
implementation of teaching reading using authentic material in the 21st century
and to explore English lecturers’ perception of teaching reading skill using
authentic material in the 21st century. This research using a descriptive qualitative
research approach in which the data collected through observation, interview and
study of documentation. The respondents of this research are 3 students of
Semester 1D and 1 English lecturer. The result shows there are 4 places for
implementing the use of authentic materials in the reading learning process. From
13 indicators of lecturer’s perception of authentic material, there are 4 different
peceptions of authentic material that influenced by internal factors. Thus,
someone’s perception of something will certainly be different because there are
many factors that can influence the emergence of these perceptions.
